Subject: Puerto Rico Financial Distress and Political Self-Determination Resolution Urging Congressional Action

In the near future I plan to offer a resolution urging the United States Congress to take action with respect to the current economic and fiscal crisis of Puerto Rico and to authorize the citizens of Puerto Rico to conduct a referendum for political self-determination.

Puerto Rico is the third largest issuer of municipal bonds in the United States and is currently facing a serious economic and fiscal crisis. Factors including a substantial decade-long decrease in Puerto Rico’s economy, employment, and population; increased spending; and inconsistent and inequitable treatment of the island by Federal laws, policies and programs have significantly contributed to the current crisis. Although Puerto Rico has begun implementing measures to address the crisis, the measures are not enough without Congressional action to reform the disparate Federal laws, policies, and programs. In addition to Congressional action to aid Puerto Rico during this crisis, action needs to be taken to allow for political self-determination.

Please join me in co-sponsoring this resolution as it is in the national interest of the United States for swift action to be taken to address Puerto Rico’s current economic and fiscal crisis.

If you have any questions or concerns, please contact my Harrisburg office at 717-705-1925.

Thank you in advance for your consideration.
