Subject: | Resolution - "Freedom from Workplace Bullies Week" in Pennsylvania |
In the near future, I plan to introduce a resolution designating the week of October 18 – 24, 2015 as "Freedom from Workplace Bullies Week" in Pennsylvania to help Pennsylvanians work to recognize workplace bullying, stop bullying, and gain the tools needed to appropriately deal with workplace violence and bullying. Workplace bullying is repeated mistreatment and a form of “abusive conduct.” It affects between 30 and 50 percent of employees sometime in their career. In more than 60% of abuse cases, the target of the bullying loses their job. Abusive work environments also cost employers through reduced productivity, turnover, absenteeism and injuries. The Pennsylvania Human Relations Act currently provides legal protections for certain class status based on race, color, familial status, religious creed, ancestry, age, sex, national origin or disability, but not workers generally. All workers should have protection under the law from abusive conduct. Please join me in recognizing the week of October 18 – 24, 2015 as “Freedom from Workplace Bullies Week” in Pennsylvania, as well as commending the Pennsylvania Healthy Workplace Advocates and the Workplace Bullying Institute on their efforts to raise awareness of the impact of, and solutions for, workplace bullying in Pennsylvania and the United States. I encourage your support of this important resolution. If you have any questions, please contact Kathy Seidl of my office at 7-4117 or kseidl@pahouse.net. Thank you. |
