MEMORANDUM

Posted: May 7, 2015 02:01 PM
From: Representative Cherelle L. Parker and Rep. John D. Payne
To: All House members
Subject: Resolution congratulating and honoring Deesha Dyer on her appointment as Social Secretary at the White House and Special Assistant to the President

In the near future, we will be introducing a resolution congratulating and honoring Deesha Dyer on her appointment as Social Secretary at the White House and Special Assistant to the President.

Ms. Dyer was born in Philadelphia in 1978 to very humble beginnings. In her elementary years, she began attending the Milton Hershey School, a school for children from low-income families, from which she graduated in 1995. From a young age, her drive, passion, and work ethic were evident to all who crossed her path to achievement.

Following her graduation, Ms. Dyer attended the University of Cincinnati to study psychology and sex education before leaving college to travel globally. She later returned to Philadelphia obtaining a job as an assistant at the Pennsylvania Real Estate Investment Trust in 2001. During her tenure, Ms. Dyer also channeled her energies into community activism, working to educate Philadelphians about sexually transmitted diseases, especially HIV/AIDS. Her efforts included creating a hip hop AIDS program, serving as a CARE advocacy volunteer, working with young adults through the Youth Health Empowerment Project, and serving as a board member for Action AIDS. Remarkably, in between her work and advocacy, Ms. Dyer also found time to write about East Coast hip-hop culture as a freelance journalist.

In the midst of the aforementioned responsibilities, Ms. Dyer remained committed to academic excellence. She admirably reentered college at age 29, earning a degree in women's studies from the Community College of Philadelphia. Two years later, she was selected to serve as an intern in the White House Office of Scheduling and Advance, a position normally occupied by much younger adults. Through her shear intelligence and zeal, she quickly impressed her colleagues and was hired as a full-time associate. Ms. Dyer’s hard work and commitment to professionalism earned her two promotions in three years.

On April 16, 2015, the White House announced Ms. Dyer’s appointment as Social Secretary and Special Assistant, a position requiring her to oversee the planning and execution of many prestigious events and visits at the White House. In addition to this new position, she plans to continue serving her community by volunteering with the homeless in Washington, D.C., as well as mentoring young girls in Philadelphia’s global empowerment program and the First Lady's mentee program.

In a statement, First Lady Michelle Obama noted, "From the day Deesha started in the Social Office nearly two years ago, she impressed me with her passion, creativity, public-mindedness and relentless competence. Since then, whether helping flawlessly execute state dinners, or going the extra mile to open the White House to people who never dreamed they would walk through these doors, Deesha has worked tirelessly to truly make the White House the 'People's House.' I am thrilled that she has agreed to continue her service as our Social Secretary."

Please join us in congratulating and honoring fellow Pennsylvanian Deesha Dyer on her extraordinary achievement as the new Social Secretary at the White House and Special Assistant to the President.

Thank you for your support of this resolution.
