Subject: | Honoring Conewango Creek in Northwestern Pennsylvania on Attaining Status as Pennsylvania's 2015 River of the Year |
In the near future, I plan to introduce a resolution honoring Conewango Creek in northwestern Pennsylvania on attaining status as Pennsylvania's 2015 River of the Year. Since 1983 the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources and the Pennsylvania Organization for Watersheds and Rivers have annually selected a river to be designated as the River of the Year. There were five waterways nominated across the state this year, and Conewango Creek was chosen as the winner with 42 percent of public votes. The Conewango Creek flows 71 miles through northwestern Pennsylvania and western New York and is part of a 900 square mile drainage basin. The creek is also home to many species of wildlife such as river otters, ospreys, herons, bald eagles, rare fish species, and other wildlife. Three dams were recently removed from the creek that allowed more than 27 miles of habitat to be opened up for various types of wildlife and recreational needs. Please join me in cosponsoring this important resolution. |
