| Subject: | Recognizing April 1, 2015, as “Mitchell Day” in Pennsylvania |
| In the very near future, I plan to introduce a resolution recognizing April 1, 2015, as “Mitchell Day” in Pennsylvania. On April 1 of each year (or on October 29 of each year in Northeast Pennsylvania), coal miners and labor organizations throughout Pennsylvania remember John Mitchell, fifth president of the United Mine Workers of America (UMWA) for his important role in the formation of the UMWA and the organization of coal miners throughout the United States and Canada. John Mitchell was a founding member of the UMWA in 1890 and served as president from 1898 until 1908. He is remembered for his success in uniting and improving working conditions for ethnically and culturally diverse coal mine workers throughout Pennsylvania under the newly formed labor organization. Armed with the first-hand experience of working as a coal miner, Mitchell strove to achieve important labor reforms that benefited coal miners in Pennsylvania and continue to benefit many workers today, including the eight-hour work day, which was first won in negotiations with coal operators on April 1, 1898, overtime wage requirements, and workplace safety standards. Accordingly, my resolution would remember John Mitchell for his contributions to workers in Pennsylvania and throughout the United States and observe April 1, 2015, as “Mitchell Day” in Pennsylvania. Please join me in co-sponsoring this important legislation. |
