Subject: Moratorium on State Land Leasing
 
When we return to session, I intend to introduce legislation that would impose a moratorium on additional leasing of state lands for the purpose of natural gas drilling, exploration, or production.

With 700,000 acres of state forest land currently subject to oil and gas development, it is imperative that we protect the remaining acreage from this intensely industrial activity.

The remaining 800,000 acres contain significant environmental, recreational and ecotourism value that may be jeopardized by further leasing of state forest land.

This legislation would not affect drilling on previously leased state lands.
