Subject: | Global War on Terrorism Veterans' Bonus Program (former HB 1294) |
In the near future, I will be introducing former House Bill 1294 which would establish a Global War on Terrorism Veterans' Bonus Program to provide one-time payments of $500 to eligible veterans. These bonuses will be a token of appreciation for Pennsylvania's veterans. Under my proposal, eligibility would be limited to veterans who served on active duty and deployed in indirect support of Global War on Terrorism and were discharged under honorable conditions. Such active duty service is defined time served for which the veteran received the Global War Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, Iraq Campaign Medal, or Afghanistan Campaign Medal, and includes hospital recovery time. Additionally, the veteran must have been, at the time of discharge, or currently be, a legal resident of this Commonwealth. In order to fund the bonuses, my legislation provides for bond authorization of up to $30,000,000. In the past, Pennsylvania has given bonuses to veterans of the Persian Gulf War and World War II. However, Pennsylvania does not have a veterans' bonus program for those who have served our country honorably as members of the armed forces during the Global War on Terrorism. My legislation ensures that the brave men and women who have served in this on going war will not go unnoticed and will instead be rewarded for their service. Please join me in honoring our state's veterans by co-sponsoring this important legislation. Previous co-sponsors of former HB 1294: HAGGERTY, D.
