| In the near future, I plan to introduce a resolution designating June 8, 2024, as “Marian Anderson Day” in Pennsylvania Born on February 27, 1897, right here in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Marian Anderson is widely considered one of the best contraltos of the 20th century. Marian Anderson is celebrated for many “firsts” in her life. Among them, she won the first scholarship awarded by the National Association of Negro Musicians. She was the first African American artist to sign with the RCA Recording company. She was the first person ever to perform solo at the Lincoln Memorial and she was the first African American to perform on the main state at the Metropolitan Opera. In 1936, she was the first African American to be invited to perform at the White House and later, she performed at the inaugurations of both President Eisenhower and President Kennedy. Throughout her life, Marian Anderson won numerous awards including the Congressional Gold Medal, Kennedy Center Honors, the George Peabody Medal and a Grammy Award for Lifetime Achievement. She earned these awards, and many more, while battling racism and being subjected to racial bias at almost every turn. Marian Anderson died of congestive heart failure on April 8, 1993. However, her legacy is preserved through her music and her ability to break down racial borders throughout the 20th century. She is a civil rights icon and inspiration for girls everywhere, and she’s a daughter of Philadelphia. Please join me in honoring Marian Anderson by designating June 8, 2024, as “Marian Anderson Day” in Pennsylvania. Thank you for your consideration. |
