Subject: | Arab American Heritage Month |
In the near future, we will be introducing a resolution to recognize April as Arab American Heritage Month in the Commonwealth. Pennsylvania’s Arab American community is vibrant and growing, with upward of 180,000 people of Arab descent who make the Commonwealth their home. Arab Americans have been great contributors to arts, education, medicine, and business throughout the Commonwealth. Samuel John Hazo was born in Pittsburgh and became the first Poet Laureate of the Commonwealth. The late David Adamany was the eighth President of Temple University, one of the most important institutions in the Commonwealth. And Yasmine Belkaid, a world-renowned immunologist, is currently a professor at Penn and director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases Microbiome program. The work done by these noted Pennsylvanians represents just a small fraction of the contributions Arab Americans make every day to the Commonwealth and to our world. They serve as civic leaders in faith-based entities and neighborhood civic associations, run businesses small and large throughout the Commonwealth, coach youth sports teams, educate children as teachers and principals, and serve as public servants and elected officials in many different capacities. All people in our Commonwealth are better for the contributions made by our Arab American community. Please join me in cosponsoring this resolution to honor their lives and work by recognizing April as Arab American Heritage month. |
