MEMORANDUM

Posted: October 10, 2023 12:30 PM
From: Representative Carol Kazeem
To: All House members
Subject: Designating October 2023 as “William Penn Landing Site in Chester Month”

Pennsylvania was established when King Charles II gave William Penn land in return for money lent to the king by Penn’s late father. William Penn intended Pennsylvania to be a safe haven for his fellow Quakers, and he set sailed for Pennsylvania on a ship called the Welcome. After 57 days, the Welcome arrived in New Castle, Delaware. However, William Penn did not disembark until he docked in Chester, Pennsylvania, on what is believed to be October 29, 1682.

William Penn loved the area and envisioned that it would become the capital of Pennsylvania. However, he was unable to reach an agreement with the settlement’s largest landowner, James Sandelands, and looked elsewhere, eventually founding Philadelphia. To bring attention to this significant moment in our Commonwealth’s history, I plan on introducing a resolution to designate October 2023 as “William Penn Landing Site in Chester Month” in Pennsylvania.

Chester continues to celebrate the anniversary of William Penn’s landing, but its unique place in this Commonwealth’s history has been neglected and overlooked. Please join me in co-sponsoring this resolution to celebrate and acknowledge this historic event.
