Subject: | Mushroom month |
I will soon introduce a resolution designating September 2015 as “Mushroom Month” in Pennsylvania. Thanks to its 66 growers, Pennsylvania leads the nation in mushroom production, having produced 571.7 million pounds in the 2013-14 growing season with an estimated value of $539.7 million. That represents nearly one-half of the $1 billion mushroom crop in the United States. Specifically, Pennsylvania’s mushroom growers produced 65 percent of the national agaricus mushrooms in the 2013-14 growing season. Pennsylvania’s mushroom farms are family-owned and operated, some for as many as four generations. The success of the mushroom industry greatly contributes to the economies of Chester County and Pennsylvania while preserving the Commonwealth’s agricultural traditions and customs. I hope you join me in co-sponsoring this resolution. |
