Subject: | Fee Waiver for Purple Heart Recipient License Plate Legislation |
In the near future, I will be introducing legislation to waive the Department of Transportation fee to acquire a license plate designating a Purple Heart award recipient. The Purple Heart has been awarded since 1932 to those wounded or killed in service of the United States military. Approximately two million courageous Americans have received the Purple Heart in the past 75 years, including thousands of Pennsylvanians. This license plate program is a wonderful way to recognize the service and sacrifice of our combat veterans. The Pennsylvania General Assembly created the Purple Heart license plate for recipients of the award in 1986. Since that time, applicants for the plate have been required to pay the Department’s fee for a replacement plate, which currently stands at $11. I believe we owe an enormous and eternal debt to the men and women who have laid their bodies on the line on our behalf. Waiving this fee will only apply to new applications for Purple Heart plates, so the impact to state finances will be negligible, and it is hardly repayment enough for what these brave Pennsylvanians have done for us. Please join me in cosponsoring this legislation to share our appreciation for our wounded combat veterans. |
