SMITH, Abraham Herr, a Representative from Lancaster County; born, March 7, 1815 in Millersville, Lancaster County, Pa.; attended, Professor Beck’s Academy, Lititz; graduated, Dickinson College, 1840; studied law under John R. Montgomery; attorney (1842-1894); elected as a Whig to the Pennsylvania House of Representatives to serve the 1844 and 1845 terms; elected, Pennsylvania State Senate (1846-1848); trustee, Dickinson College (1847-1892); trustee, Franklin and Marshall College; director and solicitor, First National Bank of Lancaster; director, Lancaster & Susquehanna Turnpike Company; engaged, real estate; elected, United States Congress (1873-1885); unsuccessful campaign for reelection to Congress (1884); died, February 16, 1894 in Lancaster, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania; interred, Woodward Hill Cemetery, Lancaster, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania.
