Shirley M. Kitchen (D), born in 1946, in Augusta, GA, daughter of Ferman and Ruth Sanders Few; Philadelphia Public School System; Antioch University (B.A.), human services, 1979; Temple University (Certificates), Child Care, Behavior Modification and Economic Development; five children.

Early Career:

Social worker; board member, St. Joseph’s Hospital; Philadelphia Democratic Executive Committee; North Philadelphia Housing Community Development Corporation; member ex officio, North Central Empowerment Zone; NAACP; member, advisory committee, Calcutta House; ward leader, 20th ward; East of Broad Coalition; co-sponsor/founder, North Philly Dazzling Diamonds.

Pennsylvania Politics:

Pa. House of Representatives 1987-1988; elected to the Pa. Senate in a special election November 5, 1996; minority chair, Public Health and Welfare Committee; Pennsylvania Legislative Black Caucus; left office November 30, 2016.
