Samuel Freeman Headley

Born at Litchfield, Otsego County, NY, January 20, 1808, Samuel F. Headley was the son of Dr. (MD) Samuel and Anna Fairchild Headley – later of Berwick, PA. He graduated from Union College in Schenectady, NY, 1831; and read law in the office of Robert C. Grier, later one of the Judges of the Supreme Court. Headley was admitted to the county bars of Luzerne, Columbia, Northumberland and adjoining counties where he distinguished himself as a member of the court. An astute businessman, Samuel owned a hotel in Berwick and an iron forge in Shickshinny borough. He was a Democrat but parted with his party after the nomination of James Buchanan for president. A Methodist Episcopal, he married Maria Josepha Boyd of Northumberland, PA, daughter of Col John Boyd. He died on July 24, 1869, Morristown, NJ.
