Born, February 1, 1744, in Lower Saucon, Bucks County, Jonas was the son of Jacob and Barbara Ritter Hartzell.  He served as Sheriff of Bucks County; was a member of the Pennsylvania Supreme Executive Council, 1789-1790; and the Senate of Pennsylvania, 1801-1805.  The senator is also noted as a defender, with Nicholas Kern, of the “insurrectionists” during the Fries Rebellion.  He married on three separate occasions and died in 1824, Allentown, Lehigh County.
