The son of state Senator and cofounder of Bellefonte, PA, James and Anne (Dunlop) Harris. William Harris was born in Bellefonte on July 12, 1799; received a classical education and became a civil engineer; planned and supervised construction of the Bald Eagle Canal and the Snow Shoe Railroad; served as Centre County Treasurer for two terms and the state Senate, 1847-1849.  The Senator was married three times, first to Mary McClenachan; second, Mary Fairlamb of West Chester (1837); and third, Adaline Miles (1847).  The Senator died in Bellefonte on October 25, 1865.
