1755 - 1826

Son of Donegal, Ireland immigrant and founder of Mifflintown John and Jean Harris, James Harris was born “on the Swatara” in 1755; relocated with family in Juniata County, where his father laid out the future site of Mifflintown; was educated at home; became Deputy Surveyor of Cumberland County, 1785; and chief Surveyor of Mifflin County, 1789.  He moved to Spring Creek married Anne Dunlop the daughter of Col. John Dunlop, with whom James founded the town of Bellefonte; became the town’s first Postmaster; served two terms in the state Senate, 1800-1808; and died on December 2, 1826.   His son, William Harris, served as a state Senator, 1847-1849.
