Freeman Hankins was born, September 30, 1918, Brunswick, Georgia, the son of Oliver and Anna Pyles Hankins. He attended Friendship School, Pittsburgh; Selden Institute in Brunswick; Temple University; and graduated from Dolan’s College of Embalming, 1945. The senator was a basketball player; served in the US Army Medical Corps, 1944-1947; pursued career as a funeral director; was on the Policy Committee of Democratic City Committee; treasurer, Metropolitan Baptist Church; member of the state House of Representatives, 1961-1966; special election to state Senate, 1967; reelected to full term, 1968; served through 1988; and died December 31, 1988. He married Dorothy Days.
