Banker and State Senator from Towanda, was born in Wysox Township, Bradford County, July 28, 1843, the son of Charles and Julia (Smith) Newell from County Monaghan, Ireland. He received his education in public schools, and in the Wyoming Seminary at Kingston, Luzerne Co., Pa.; studied dentistry at LeRaysville, Bradford County, and in 1866 opened an office at Wyalusing, where he practiced for twenty-four years. He was elected to the state Senate in 1884, re-elected in 1888; and elected cashier (President) of the Citizens National Bank, 1890, serving until his death.  The Senator married Adelaide Passmore of Wysox in 1874.  Dr. Newell was a Mason and a member of the Odd Fellows.  He died on May 27, 1919.
