Born in Newark New Jersey, May 1, 1838, the son of the Rev. Frederick Gregory and Cornelia (Finley) Betts; parents moved to Clearfield County in 1849; educated in public and private schools; newspaper apprentice at the Crawford Journal, Meadville, age 13; clerk at Reed and Weaver Lumber Company, Clearfield, age 15; partner by 1860; Clearfield burgess and councilman; pursued real estate business, coal and lumber, and manufacturing business,  president Clearfield Gas and Water Co., and state Senate, 1887-1890.  Betts was an officer of the Beech Creek Railroad Co.; Clearfield National Bank, Clearfield Bituminous Coal Co.; Clearfield Cemetery Co.; the Clearfield Furniture Works; and was a force in the Clearfield Democratic Committee.  He died of Bright’s Disease on September 24, 1896.   Senator Betts married Margaret Irvin, daughter of William Irvin of Curwensville, and was the father of state Senator William Irvin Betts.
