George Washington Toland was born in Philadelphia, Pa., February 8, 1796, the son of Henry Toland of Germantown. He attended common schools; graduated from Princeton in 1816; read law and admitted to bar in 1819; held several local offices; elected to the state House of Representatives, 1832 and 1844; served in the state Senate, 1834-1836; was elected as a Whig to the U.S. House of Representatives, 1837-1843; died in Philadelphia, Pa., January 30, 1869; interment in Laurel Hill Cemetery. His wife’s name was Hanna S.
