Born in Hempfield Twp., Westmoreland County, August 16, 1862, the son of Amos and Sarah Kepple Kunkel; John Kunkel attended public schools; Greensburg Seminary for law prep.; read law in the office of McAfee, Atkinson & Peoples of Greensburg; taught four years and was admitted to the bar in 1887; served three years as school director in Greensburg; member of the state House of Representatives, 1922; the state Senate, 1925-1929; served as a trustee of Franklin and Marshall College; and director of the St. Paul’s Orphans’ Home, Butler, Pa. He married Alice Grant Walthour and died in office, first year of his second term, December 20, 1929.
