Early Life:

 Jesse C. Horton, born May 1, 1797, Forty Fort, Luzerne County, Pennsylvania; son of John and Mary de la Montague Horton; served, New Jersey militia under Colonel Seward, Captain Swazey, War of 1812; established, stagecoach line, 1816; engaged in staging and carrying the United States mail, Berwick, Columbia County, Pennsylvania, 1820; married, Harriet Ford, 1820 (d.1823), children, Annie Maria Horton Gougewer, Harriet Westler; married, Martha Cooke, 1825, children, Mary C. Horton, Martha C. Horton; moved, Northumberland County, 1841; elected, Democrat, Pennsylvania State Senate, 1843-1845; died, February 21, 1873, Point Breeze, Northumberland County, Pennsylvania; interment, Northumberland Memorial Park, Stonington, Northumberland County, Pennsylvania.

Early Career:

Inaugurated a new era in stagecoach traveling in northern Pennsylvania by establishing a line of four-horse coaches from Baltimore to Owego, New York, by the way of Harrisburg, Sunbury, Wilkes Barre and Montrose, and also a line from Philadelphia to Wilkes Barre by the way of Easton, and from New York City to Montrose, Pennsylvania, by the way of Morristown and Newark, New Jersey, and Milford, Pennsylvania, with post-offices established at Plymouth, Kingston, Pottstown, and Tunkhannock.
