John Andrew Hiestand, born October 2, 1824, East Donegal Township, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania; common school education; Pennsylvania College at Gettysburg; studied law; admitted to the bar, 1849; law practice, Lancaster, Pennsylvania, 1849-1858; elected, Whig, Pennsylvania State House of Representatives, 1852, 1853, 1856; purchased an interest, Lancaster Examiner and Herald, 1858; elected, Republican, Pennsylvania State Senate, 1861-1863; unsuccessful campaign, United States House of Representatives, 1868; presidential appointment, Naval Officer, Port of Philadelphia, 1871, reappointed, 1875 served until 1879; elected, Republican, United States House of Representatives, 1885-1889; died, December 13, 1890, (age 66 years, 72 days) Lancaster, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania; interment, Marietta Cemetery, Marietta, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania.

Purchased an interest in Lancaster Examiner and Herald, from Pennsylvania State Senator, Edward C. Darlington, 1858.
