Henry L. Benner was born in 1806, the son of prominent furnace, earthenware, and brick manufacturer Henry L. Benner Sr. and his wife Mary.  Henry apparently received a good education, entering the banking and insurance business, rising to the position of president of the National Safety Fund and Trust Company of Philadelphia.  He married Elizabeth Githens Dowdney in 1841.  Elected to the state Senate, 1846-1848, Benner pursued his financial interests to the Civil War, enlisting as a Major, US Army Paymaster in 1861.  During deployment from Washington to Fortress Monroe, Virginia, aboard the Ocean Queen, Benner succumbed to “a stroke of apoplexy,” pronounced dead near Fort Monroe at 6:30 AM, Saturday April, 26, 1862. His remains were returned to Philadelphia where he was buried.  The son of Henry and Elizabeth Benner, Dr. Henry Dowdney Benner, became a prominent Philadelphia physician
