Born at Hereford, Baltimore County, Maryland January 18, 1836, the son of the Rev. Henry G. and Sarah A. Gilbert Dill; rural education; entered Dickinson Seminary at thirteen; graduated from Dickinson College, 1855; taught in Frederick County, Md.; read law with John Lynch of Frederick; admitted to the Maryland bar, 1858; returned to Gettysburg where he joined the bar and practiced law; moved to Huntsville, Alabama where he entered a law partnership with his uncle; and in 1860, returned to Pennsylvania and settled in Lewisburg, Union County, entering private practice. Dill served in an Emergency Militia during the Civil War. A Democrat, Andrew was elected to the state House of Representatives, 1869; the state Senate 1871-78; nominated as the Democratic Party’s candidate for Governor, 1878; lost his bid to Republican nominee Henry Hoyt; became Democratic State Committee Chair in 1880; returned to the practice of law; was a partner in Billmyer, Dill & Co., manufacturer of “bill-timber and boats;” and numerous other business ventures. In 1887, he received an appointment as U.S. Marshal, Eastern District of Pennsylvania. He married Catharine S. Slifer, the daughter of state Senator and Gov. Curtin’s Commonwealth Secretary during the Civil War, Eli Slifer. Senator Dill died on January 11, 1891 in Lewisburg.
