Early Career:

Elected, colonel, One Hundred and Thirty-Second regiment, first brigade and Fourteenth division, The commission under which he led his regiment in the war of 1812 was given by Governor Simon Snyder under date of August 3, 1811. After the close of the war, he resided at Lancaster the remainder of his life.

He gained the confidence and esteem of the Seneca's great chief, Cornplanter, and of his warriors, and helped reconcile the native Americans in Venango County, PA to the peaceable settlement and occupation of the land by the white man. He also took part in helping Oliver Hazard Perry to build ships on Lake Erie during the War of 1812.
