Early Life: 

First Sergeant, Doctor Charles Edward Quail, born October 9, 1841, Baltimore, Maryland, son of Alsatian-German immigrant Conrad Quail and Mary Ports; educated, Baltimore common schools, Mount Irvin College, University of Maryland Medical School; First Sargent, 1862-1865 (Civil War); finished medical school; relocated, Auburn, Pennsylvania; married, Emma Catherine Weishampel, 1867, three children; doctor; Schuykill County coroner; federal pension examiner; elected, Republican Pennsylvania State Senate, 1901-1908; chair, Schuykill County Republican committee; died suddenly, Capitol Building, Harrisburg, Dauphin County, Pennsylvania, December 21, 1910, interment; Auburn Church of God Cemetery, Auburn, Schuylkill County, Pennsylvania.    

Early Career:

Enlisted, August 13, 1862, Sergeant, Company D, 8th Maryland Volunteer Infantry (Union), Baltimore, famed “Maryland Brigade.” Action, Antietam; Clarksburg (West Virginia); Bolivar Heights; Gettysburg Campaign; Maryland Heights and Funkstown (Hagerstown); Wilderness; Laurel Hill; wounded, Spotsylvania Courthouse. At Laurel Hill, took company command after all officers had been killed or wounded. Continued action, many major battles including, Hatcher’s Run; Siege of Petersburg; and Appomattox Court House, April 9, 1865; mustered out, along with regiment, May 31, 1865. 

Returned, Maryland, received, medical degree; interned, Baltimore Infirmary; relocated, Auburn, Pennsylvania, 1867, opened practice. 

Professional titles; business ownership; board memberships; local government; club memberships:

Member, Schuylkill and Pennsylvania Medical Associations; member, Gettysburg Battlefield Memorial Commission; member, treasurer, Auburn School Board, thirty-three years; Chair, Schuykill County Republican committee two years. 

Pennsylvania Politics:

Schuykill County Coroner, 1873-1876. 

Federal Civil War pension examiner, 1889-1901. 

Elected, Republican, Pennsylvania State Senate, 29th district, Schuykill (Part) County, 1901-1906, Republican, Pennsylvania State Senate, 29th district, Schuykill (Part) County, 1907-1908; committee assignments, Appropriations, Judicial Appropriations, Military Affairs, Public Health and Sanitation (Chairman) Public Printing, Public Road and Highways.     

Legacy:

Traveled to Harrisburg confer with Governor Edwin S. Stuart about reimbursing the railroads for providing transportation (for the old soldiers) to the dedication of the Gettysburg State Memorial. He died suddenly in the Capitol Building, December 21, 1910.
