Born in Hudson, New York, January 28, 1810, the son of Joseph and Sarah (Rexford) Guernsey, John W. Guernsey moved with his parents to Montrose Susquehanna County; attended the Harford Academy; taught school; read law in Lawrenceville, Susquehanna County with a “Mr. Purple;” and joined the county bar before relocating in Tioga, Pennsylvania, admitted to the Tioga County Bar in 1835, becoming the first attorney of record in the town.  After a brief stay in Norristown, Pennsylvania, he settled permanently in Tioga, where he was elected to the state Senate in 1850, serving one term; elected as a member of the state House of Representatives, 1864-1865;  served as justice of the peace for six years; two months before his death he was reelected to the same position in 1882; and also served as Tioga Borough burgess for two terms.  He married Susan E. Morris, the daughter of Judge Samuel Morris.  The Hon. John W. Guernsey died in Tioga Borough, November 29, 1882; interred in the St. Andrews Church cemetery, Tioga.
