Born in Robesonia on December 21, 1920, Robert R. Gerhart Jr. is the son of Robert R. and Mae R Moyer Gerhart., Sr. He attended Robesonia High School and graduated from Albright College in 1941, serving in the US Army during WWII, 1945-1946. Pursued the hotel business in Wildwood, New Jersey in 1963, while running a public relations business (Roberts and Co.) As his interest grew in the media he published the New Era, a union journal in Reading, and later became one of Pennsylvania’s pioneers in the Cable TV business, a contemporary of former Governor Milton Shapp. In addition to his business interests, Gerhart’s early political efforts were focused on a successful stint as a campaign manager for Congressman George Rhodes (six terms), and in 1968, landed him in the Senate of Pennsylvania. He was a member of the Robesonia Borough Council, 1946-1956; Director of Public Relations for the City of Reading, 1958-1959; was a member of the state House of Representatives, 1967-1968. He married Lillian Livinghouse in 1941. The senator retired to Tucson, Arizona, where he was honored at his 90th birthday banquet, December 21, 2010.
