WASHINGTON, Joseph P., a Representative from Cambria County; born, Becarria Township, Cambria County, Pa., on January 15, 1879; graduated, St. Francis College, 1900; assistant mine foreman; locomotive fireman and engineer, Pennsylvania Railroad, Cresson; bookkeeper, Philadelphia Coal and Coke Company; payroll clerk and foreman, Paul Construction Company; elected, council, Sankertown Borough (2 terms); elected, school board, Sankertown (26 years; president, 20 years); school director, Sankertown Borough (12 years); elected to the Pennsylvania House of Representatives as a Democrat in 1924; reelected to the House in 1928; elected, Minority Leader (1929-1930); unsuccessful campaign for reelection to the House (1926, 1930); labor mediator, Pinchot Administration (1931-1935); died, August 11, 1957 in Cresson, Cambria County, Pennsylvania; interred, Saint Francis Xavier Cemetery, Cresson, Cambria County, Pennsylvania.
