BENTLEY, Alice M., a Representative from Crawford County; born, Wayne Township, Crawford County, Pa. on April 12, 1859; graduated, Northwest State Normal School (now Pennsylvania Western University, Edinboro), 1883; graduated, Chautauqua Literary and Scientific Course of Study, 1887; teacher (20 years); unsuccessful campaign, school superintendent, Crawford County (1902); solicitor, Mutual Life Insurance Company of New York (20 years); elected to the Pennsylvania House of Representatives as a Republican in 1922; reelected to serve 2 more consecutive terms; (first woman) appointed, Speaker pro tempore (1923-1928); unsuccessful campaign for reelection to the House (1928); died, August 6, 1949 in Conewango Township, Warren County, Pennsylvania; interred, Mount Hope Cemetery, Mount Hope, Crawford County, Pennsylvania.
