1799 -

Born, February 11, 1799, Pottstown, Montgomery County, the son of William and Mary Thompson; John Thompson was educated in common schools; apprenticed as a carpenter; commissioned Justice of the Peace by Gov. Wolf, 1833; elected five consecutive terms thereafter; member of the state House of Representatives, 1857; one term in the state Senate; director of the Pottstown National Bank; president of the Mutual Fire Co. of Pottstown; he never married.  Note that Thompson’s sole purpose for coming to Harrisburg was to argue a case for the formation of Madison County, from the existent Montgomery County.  The issue had raged on in Montgomery County from the early 1850s until the 1874 Constitution forbade the formation of a new county, less than 400 Sq. miles, or less than 20,000 inhabitants.
