Elijah Babbitt, born July 29, 1795, Providence, Providence County, Rhode Island; moved with his parents, New York State, 1805; academic education, moved, Milton, Pennsylvania, 1816; studied law, admitted to the bar, and commenced practice, Milton, 1824; moved, Erie, Pennsylvania, 1826 and continued the practice of law; law partner, James Darwin Dunlap; attorney, borough and subsequently for the city of Erie; prosecuting attorney, Erie County, Pennsylvania, 1833; deputy attorney general, Pennsylvania, 1834-1835; elected, Anti-Mason, Pennsylvania State House of Representatives, 1836-1837; elected, Whig, Pennsylvania State Senate, 1844-1845; elected, Republican, United States House of Representatives, Thirty-sixth, Thirty-seventh Congresses, 1859-1863; not a candidate, reelection, 1862; resumed, practice of law; married, Caroline Elizabeth Kelso Babbitt, children, Emma A.
