Of Bellefonte, Centre County, Cyrus Alexander was born in Mifflin County, September 10, 1836, the son of John and Mary Alexander.  He attended public schools, read law, and joined the Centre County bar about 1862.  Alexander pursued business interests as a limestone quarry operator, while he played out an unsuccessful bid for Congress as an Independent in 1874, but executed a successful campaign for state Senator in November 1878, serving through 1882.  The Senator married Margaret Potter in 1857.  He died in Aiken, South Carolina, March 18, 1887, while convalescing.  He was described as a “genial, kind-hearted man.”
