Maholn Yardley was born in Yardley, Bucks County to John and Frances (Haypenny) Yardley. Growing up he attended public schools and graduated from Lafayette College with a law degree. Soon after he was married Elizabeth Brock. Prior to being elected to the Senate, Senator Yardley was admitted to the Easton Bar in 1845. He then enlisted in the Co.K 104th Regt. PVI on September 20,1861 after leaving the Senate. On April 26,1863 he was promoted to Captain and U.S. Army Provost Marshal of the 5th district, a position he held until his death. Maholn Yardley is known for his participation in the "Advance on Manasass," the Peninsula Campaign, Battle of Williamsburg, Battles of Fair Oaks and Seven Pines (The Seven days before Richmond Campaign), White Oak Swamp, Malvern Hill, Harrisons Landing, Yorktown, and the North and South Carolina Campaigns, which includes the Charleston Expedition in early April, 1863.
