A RESOLUTION
Recognizing the week of May 12 through 18, 2024, as "Food
Allergy Awareness Week" in Pennsylvania.
WHEREAS, "Food Allergy Awareness Week" was established as a
national week to encourage food allergy awareness and support
those who are impacted by food allergies and anaphylaxis; and
WHEREAS, Food allergies affect approximately 20 to 33 million
Americans, including 5.6 million children; and
WHEREAS, The prevalence of food allergies appears to be
increasing among individuals 18 years of age or younger to
approximately two students in every classroom in every school in
the United States; and
WHEREAS, The nine foods that account for 90% of all food
allergy reactions are peanuts, tree nuts, milk, egg, wheat, soy,
sesame, fish and shellfish; and
WHEREAS, A food allergy is an immune system response to a
food that the body mistakenly believes is harmful; and
WHEREAS, When an individual with a food allergy eats the

food, the individual's immune system releases massive amounts of
chemicals, including histamines, which trigger a cascade of
symptoms that can affect the respiratory system,
gastrointestinal tract, skin or cardiovascular system; and
WHEREAS, Immunotherapy is a promising treatment to prevent
allergic reactions, but there is currently no cure for food
allergies; and
WHEREAS, Anaphylaxis is a serious allergic reaction that
comes on quickly and has the potential to become life-
threatening; and
WHEREAS, Managing a food allergy on a daily basis involves
constant vigilance because even trace amounts of an allergen can
trigger an allergic reaction in some individuals; therefore be
it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives recognize the
week of May 12 through 18, 2024, as "Food Allergy Awareness
Week" in Pennsylvania.
