A RESOLUTION
Celebrating the National Guard on its 387th birthday.
WHEREAS, The National Guard, as the organized militia of the
United States, was born in Boston, Massachusetts, on December
13, 1636; and
WHEREAS, The Massachusetts General Court declared that the
colony's existing militia companies be organized into three
regiments, of which four Army National Guard units are descended
from those original regiments and are the oldest units in the
United States military; and
WHEREAS, Citizen-soldiers answered the call and assembled for
military training on the Salem common in the spring of 1637 at
the "First Muster of a militia regiment"; and
WHEREAS, By the 19th century, the term "National Guard"
replaced "militia" as a tribute to the Marquis de Lafayette,
General George Washington's trusted confidant; and
WHEREAS, The National Guard still holds true by upholding
