A RESOLUTION
Designating the month of September 2021 as "Mushroom Month" in
Pennsylvania.
WHEREAS, American mushroom farming began on a farm in Chester
County, now recognized as the "Mushroom Capital of the World";
and
WHEREAS, Pennsylvania has a growing and productive mushroom
agribusiness in many parts of this Commonwealth; and
WHEREAS, Thanks to its 68 mushroom farms, Pennsylvania leads
the nation in mushroom production; and
WHEREAS, Pennsylvania growers produced more than 317 million
pounds of mushrooms in the last growing season with an estimated
value of $481 million; and
WHEREAS, Pennsylvania's mushroom farms are family owned and
operated, some for as many as four generations; and
WHEREAS, Mushrooms are one of the most difficult commodities
to grow due to the intensive labor required to produce a
consistent, high-quality crop; and

WHEREAS, Modern mushroom farms are highly technical
operations that utilize computerized systems to monitor
production and safety; and
WHEREAS, Mushroom growers carefully prepare compost, generate
an indoor pasteurization process, control temperature and
humidity and harvest their crop, thanks to advancements in
technology; and
WHEREAS, The success of the mushroom industry contributes
greatly to the economies of Chester County and this Commonwealth
while preserving this Commonwealth's agricultural traditions and
customs; therefore be it
RESOLVED, That the Senate designate the month of September
2021 as "Mushroom Month" in Pennsylvania; and be it further
RESOLVED, That the Senate recognize Pennsylvania's thriving
agriculture industry and encourage all residents to acknowledge
and celebrate the achievements of the mushroom industry to
produce an abundant, profitable mushroom crop recognized for
superior quality and its significance to this Commonwealth's
economy.
