A RESOLUTION
Recognizing August 19, 2021, as "Aviation Day" in Pennsylvania.
WHEREAS, In 1903, brothers Orville and Wilbur Wright left
their hometown of Dayton, Ohio, and traveled to the sands of
Kitty Hawk, North Carolina; and
WHEREAS, In Kitty Hawk, the Wright brothers made the first
controlled, sustained flight of a powered, heavier-than-air
aircraft, and in the process established a tradition of
excellence in innovation that endures to this day; and
WHEREAS, Declared in 1939 by President Franklin D. Roosevelt,
"National Aviation Day" celebrates the history and development
of aviation; and
WHEREAS, This annual event provides an ideal time to pay
tribute to the many pioneering individuals who have dared to
reach for the heavens; and
WHEREAS, The date of August 19 was selected specifically to
correspond with the birthday of Orville Wright, and this legacy

of the Wright brothers' historic flight helps to ensure that
important details of the past are transmitted to succeeding
generations for their reflection and appreciation; and
WHEREAS, The many organizations and airports throughout this
Commonwealth that have participated in "National Aviation Day"
are to be commended for their tremendous efforts to guarantee
that the history of aviation in the United States will not be
forgotten; and
WHEREAS, Aviation in this Commonwealth dates back more than
100 years and currently ranks 16th in the country in the number
of public-use aviation facilities; and
WHEREAS, With 124 airports, heliports and seaplane bases,
aviation provides an annual economic impact of $28.5 billion to
this Commonwealth; and
WHEREAS, The aviation industry supports more than 322,000
jobs, making it one of the largest employment sectors in this
Commonwealth; and
WHEREAS, Pennsylvania-based companies, such as Lycoming
Engines headquartered in northcentral Pennsylvania, have grown
over the years to employ hundreds of workers who specialize in
the engineering, manufacturing, service and support of piston
aircraft engines; and
WHEREAS, The need for these jobs translates into expanded
curriculum at many Pennsylvania colleges in the field of
aviation maintenance and technology; and
WHEREAS, Residents of this Commonwealth and aviation
enthusiasts are encouraged to celebrate the history of aviation
and support the future of aviation here in this Commonwealth;
therefore be it
RESOLVED, That the Senate recognize August 19, 2021, as
