AN ACT
Amending the act of March 10, 1949 (P.L.30, No.14), entitled "An
act relating to the public school system, including certain
provisions applicable as well to private and parochial
schools; amending, revising, consolidating and changing the
laws relating thereto," in duties and powers of boards of
school directors, providing for school athletic playoffs and
championships.
The General Assembly of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania
hereby enacts as follows:
Section 1. The act of March 10, 1949 (P.L.30, No.14), known
as the Public School Code of 1949, is amended by adding a
section to read:
Section 511.1. School Athletic Playoffs and Championships.--
(a) (1) No student who attends a boundary school may compete
in a school athletic playoff or championship that is sponsored,
sanctioned or approved by the Pennsylvania Interscholastic
Athletic Association in which a student from a non-boundary
school competes.
(2) The board of school directors of a school district shall
enforce the provisions of this subsection as they relate to
students who attend a boundary school in the school district.

(b) (1) No student who attends a non-boundary school may
compete in a school athletic playoff or championship that is
sponsored, sanctioned or approved by the Pennsylvania
Interscholastic Athletic Association in which a student from a
boundary school competes.
(2) The governing body of the non-boundary school shall
enforce the provisions of this section as they relate to
students who attend the non-boundary school.
(c) No boundary school or non-boundary school may be a
member of the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association
if membership in the association would prevent or impair the
duty of the board of school directors of the boundary school or
governing body of the non-boundary school to enforce the
provisions of this section.
(d) As used in this section, the following words and phrases
shall have the meanings given to them in this subsection unless
the context clearly indicates otherwise:
"Athletic playoff or championship" shall mean an athletic
event or contest in which students from boundary schools, non-
boundary schools, or both, are invited to compete that occurs
after the regular season for the top competitors or teams of a
conference, division, region or similar unit of organization, or
between conferences, divisions, regions or similar units of
organization, to determine the champion or a similar accolade
for the conference, division, region or similar unit of
organization or for the conferences, divisions, regions, similar
units of organization or this Commonwealth as a whole.
"Boundary school" shall mean a school of a school district
governed by a board of school directors duly elected in
accordance with this act and the act of June 3, 1937 (P.L.1333,

No.320), known as the "Pennsylvania Election Code."
"Non-boundary school" shall mean a school that is not a
boundary school.
Section 2. This act shall take effect in 60 days.
