(4) In 1949, Commander Schofield received his
undergraduate degree from the University of Pittsburgh and a
year later was recalled and saw action in Korea.
(5) Commander Schofield served as a surface warfare ship
pilot and retired as group commander for reserve activities
in 1972.
(6) Commander Schofield was a member of the executive
committee of the Greater Pittsburgh Advisory Board of the
Salvation Army, a trustee and past president of the
Pennsylvania School Boards Association, a past vice president
and board member of the Mental Health Association of
Allegheny County, a board member of the Kiwanis Club of
Glenshaw, a former president of the Shaler Area school board
from 1976 to 1981 and 1986 to 1993, a board secretary of the
Institute for Research, Education and Training in Addictions
and a member of the Allegheny County Local Emergency Planning
Committee and the Pennsylvania State Association of County
Directors of Veterans Affairs.
(7) Commander William J. Schofield, III, died on January
24, 2005, of natural causes.
(b) Designation.--The bridge, identified as Bridge Key 1951,
carrying State Route 4017 on Wetzel Road, Shaler Township,
Allegheny County, is designated the Commander William J.
Schofield, III, Memorial Bridge.
(c) Signs.--The Department of Transportation shall erect and
maintain appropriate signs displaying the name of the bridge to
traffic in both directions on the bridge.
Section 2. Effective date.
This act shall take effect in 60 days.
