A RESOLUTION
Designating May 30, 2020, as "America-Korea Alliance Day."
WHEREAS, At the end of World War II, Korea was a Japanese
colony occupied by the United States and the Soviet Union; and
WHEREAS, With American soldiers, sailors, airmen and Marines
in South Korea, the United States Forces Korea constituted a
major presence in the region; and
WHEREAS, On June 25, 1950, North Korea launched a full-scale
invasion of South Korea; and
WHEREAS, The United States came to the aid of South Korea,
leading a United Nations' force composed of more than a dozen
countries; and
WHEREAS, Communist China joined North Korea in the war in
November 1950, unleashing a massive Chinese ground attack
against American forces; and
WHEREAS, The United States sent approximately 90% of the
overall troops that were sent to aid South Korea; and
WHEREAS, The United States spent approximately $67 billion on
the war; and

WHEREAS, On July 27, 1953, the Korean Armistice Agreement was
signed and terms of the armistice include the creation of the
demilitarized zone (DMZ); and
WHEREAS, Almost 40,000 Americans died in action in Korea and
more than 100,000 were wounded; and
WHEREAS, As of February 2020, there are 8,075 American
soldiers still unaccounted for from the Korean War; and
WHEREAS, The survival of the Republic of Korea is dependent
on sustaining civil liberties, democracy and economic
development in the peninsula; and
WHEREAS, Continued alliance between South Korea and the
United States is vital for monitoring the growing nuclear threat
from North Korea; therefore be it
RESOLVED, That the Senate designate May 30, 2020, as
"America-Korea Alliance Day."
