A RESOLUTION
Recognizing the Wesley A.M.E. Zion Church on its 200 years of
service to the City of Philadelphia and its dedication to
improving lives in its community.
WHEREAS, On June 6, 2020, the Wesley A.M.E Zion Church
celebrated 200 years of continuous service in South
Philadelphia; and
WHEREAS, Wesley A.M.E Zion Church is one of the earliest
independent African-American churches established in the City of
Philadelphia; and
WHEREAS, Organized on June 6, 1820, the Wesley A.M.E. Zion
Church grew to have the second largest membership of all black
churches in the city at that time; and
WHEREAS, The church has been the site of abolitionist
rallies, antislavery protests and race improvement conventions;
and
WHEREAS, The Wesley A.M.E. Zion Church was one of the targets
of the Lombard Street abolitionist riots where angry mobs burned
abolitionist meeting places; and

WHEREAS, The church was instrumental in founding the
Frederick Douglas Memorial Hospital, the first hospital in
Philadelphia for African-American residents; therefore be it
RESOLVED, That the Senate recognize the Wesley A.M.E. Zion
Church on its 200 years of service to the City of Philadelphia
and its dedication to improving lives in its community.
