A RESOLUTION
Recognizing the 244th anniversary of the founding of the United
States Army.
WHEREAS, In 1775, the Massachusetts Provincial Congress
appealed to the Second Continental Congress in Philadelphia to
assume authority of the New England Army, which was comprised of
a number of independent revolutionary militia companies; and
WHEREAS, Although there is no official written record,
historians suggest that on June 14, 1775, the Congress of the
United States voted to "adopt" the Boston troops and formed a
committee "to bring in a draft of rules and regulations for the
government of the Army," in addition to providing a funding
appropriation of $2 million at the request of John Adams; and
WHEREAS, The actions of the Congress of the United States on
June 14, 1775, establishing the American Continental Army,
marked the birth date of the United States Army; and
WHEREAS, On June 15, 1775, George Washington was appointed as
Commander-in-Chief of the United States Army by the Congress of

the United States; and
WHEREAS, The United States Army is made up of active and
reserve components; and
WHEREAS, In 2018, the United States Army was comprised of
more than 1 million soldiers, with approximately 476,000 on
active duty, 191,000 in the United States Army Reserve and
335,000 in the United States Army National Guard; and
WHEREAS, Soldiers live by the Seven Core Army Values that
include loyalty, duty, respect, selfless service, honor,
integrity and personal courage; and
WHEREAS, It is said that "there is nothing stronger than a
United States Army soldier"; and
WHEREAS, The strength and power of the United States Army, as
demonstrated during Operation Desert Storm, Operation Enduring
Freedom, Operation Iraqi Freedom and several additional combat
missions have provided Americans with safety, security and
freedom; therefore be it
RESOLVED, That the Senate recognize the 244th anniversary of
the founding of the United States Army and urge all
Pennsylvanians to remember the sacrifices of the brave men and
women who valiantly served their country at home and abroad.
