A RESOLUTION
Recognizing the week of May 12 through 18, 2019, as "National
Hospital Week" in Pennsylvania.
WHEREAS, Pennsylvania hospitals and health systems ensure
that health care services are available in this Commonwealth 24
hours a day, 7 days a week, providing acute inpatient care as
well as outpatient, emergency, behavioral health,
rehabilitation, long-term and home care; and
WHEREAS, Pennsylvania's 41 trauma centers, 7 burn centers and
15 critical access hospitals deliver specialized care for the
most rural populations in this Commonwealth; and
WHEREAS, Pennsylvania is home to seven medical degree-
granting schools as well as numerous academic medical centers
and teaching hospitals that train future health care providers
and invest in critical health research; and
WHEREAS, "National Hospital Week" dates back to 1921, in
Chicago, as an event to build trust following the Spanish

influenza outbreak; and
WHEREAS, The observance is a reminder that hospitals are
foundations of the communities that built them, serving people
from all walks of life; and
WHEREAS, "National Hospital Week" celebrates hospitals and
the people who support the health of their communities with
dedication and compassion; and
WHEREAS, Pennsylvania hospitals are multidimensional,
partnering with other community organizations to offer health
care services that focus on health promotion, disease prevention
and wellness; and
WHEREAS, Pennsylvania hospitals provide free health care
services to individuals who have no health insurance or
inadequate health insurance coverage, providing nearly $778.5
million in uncompensated care during 2017; and
WHEREAS, Pennsylvania hospitals contributed more than $128.9
billion to this Commonwealth's economy during 2017; and
WHEREAS, Pennsylvania hospitals are among the leading
employers in their communities, providing approximately 650,000
jobs, directly and indirectly; therefore be it
RESOLVED, That the Senate recognize the week of May 12
through 18, 2019, as "National Hospital Week" in Pennsylvania;
and be it further
RESOLVED, That the Senate urge its members to visit the
hospitals in their communities to learn about the innovative,
quality care and services that are improving the health and
well-being of residents of this Commonwealth.
