A RESOLUTION
Declaring March 4, 2019, as "Andrew Askin Day" in Pennsylvania.
WHEREAS, Andrew Theodore Askin died 100 years ago in the line
of duty, at sea with the entire crew of the U.S.S. Cyclops, at
22 years of age; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Askin was born in Baltimore, Maryland, on
February 6, 1896, to William Askin and Annie F. Askin; and
WHEREAS, The U.S.S. Cyclops was never found and the crew has
two dates of death; and
WHEREAS, The first date of death is March 4, 1918, the date
the ship was lost; and
WHEREAS, The second date of death is June 14, 1918, the date
the Assistant Secretary of the Navy, Franklin D. Roosevelt,
declared the U.S.S. Cyclops to be officially lost; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Askin was survived by his mother and his
siblings Gussie, Sedonia, Alberta, Walter, Ethel, Dallett,
Lucila and Ada; and
WHEREAS, For a part of his life, Mr. Askin resided with his

mother at 151 Main Street, Steelton, Dauphin County,
Pennsylvania; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Askin has been remembered by the Veterans of the
Civil War, Spanish American War and World War I, when the Andrew
Askin American Legion Post 479 in Steelton, Dauphin County,
Pennsylvania, was organized and segregated; therefore be it
RESOLVED, That the Senate declare March 4, 2019, as "Andrew
Askin Day" in Pennsylvania.
