A RESOLUTION
Designating March 19, 2019, as "Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority,
Inc., Day" in Pennsylvania.
WHEREAS, Alpha Kappa Alpha, Inc., (AKA) has attained
distinction as the oldest Greek-lettered organization
established by African-American college-educated women; and
WHEREAS, With more than 1,000 undergraduate and graduate
chapters and 300,000 members throughout the United States, the
United States Virgin Islands, the Caribbean, Canada, Japan,
Germany, South Korea, Africa and other nations, AKA has grown
and flourished in the pursuit of peace and improved quality of
life for others since its establishment in 1908 at Howard
University in Washington, DC, by founder Ethel Hedgeman Lyle;
and
WHEREAS, AKA members have generously engaged their energies
in global advocacy and service projects to improve
socioeconomic, racial, political and environmental conditions as
AKA's functions have expanded for more than a century; and

WHEREAS, The nearly 300,000 distinguished women who comprise
the membership of AKA have earned recognition for their
excellent academic records, proven leadership skills,
impassioned volunteerism and effective outreach; and
WHEREAS, Annually, the International Program regularly
schedules six Community Impact Days to highlight AKA's
collective impact in the five target areas of education, women's
health care and wellness, building economic legacy, the arts and
global impact; and
WHEREAS, The Senate proudly notes the strength of AKA's
relationships with the residents and elected officials of this
Commonwealth; and
WHEREAS, The Senate commends AKA's continuing engagement in
improving community resources and advancing local, regional and
global human relations and social justice; therefore be it
RESOLVED, That the Senate designate March 19, 2019, as "Alpha
Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., Day" in Pennsylvania.
