A RESOLUTION
Designating the week of March 18 through 22, 2019, as
"Pennsylvania Ag Literacy Week" and commending Pennsylvania
Friends of Agriculture Foundation, originator of this
observance, and Pennsylvania Farm Bureau, its sponsor.
WHEREAS, Farming and other agricultural operations are
carried out in each county of this Commonwealth, where more than
58,000 farms of various sizes produce commodities; and
WHEREAS, An annual economic impact of $135.7 billion is
attributable to the State agricultural industry; and
WHEREAS, Pennsylvania Friends of Agriculture Foundation has
been Pennsylvania Farm Bureau's charitable organization since
1986; and
WHEREAS, The foundation has preserved and promoted
agriculture by highlighting its value as our largest industry,
its sources and diverse systems and its role in our daily lives;
and
WHEREAS, The foundation has developed Educator's Ag
Institute, Mobile Ag Education Science Lab Program, Ag on the Go

Program and Positively 4 Kids! for teachers and elementary and
middle school students who may have no other exposure to
agriculture; and
WHEREAS, The foundation provides scholarships and
agriculture-related career services for postsecondary students;
and
WHEREAS, The foundation further provides continuing education
for teachers through training on agricultural commodities and
concepts; and
WHEREAS, The book Right This Very Minute; A Table-to-Farm
Book About Food and Farming, connecting the work of farmers with
our quality of life and the foods we eat, is the focus of 2019
"Pennsylvania Ag Literacy Week" activities in classrooms
Statewide; therefore be it
RESOLVED, That the Senate designate the week of March 18
through 22, 2019, as "Pennsylvania Ag Literacy Week"; and be it
further
RESOLVED, That the Senate commend Pennsylvania Friends of
Agriculture Foundation and its sponsoring organization,
Pennsylvania Farm Bureau, for engaging teachers and students in
agricultural interests and supporting agricultural practices and
production in this Commonwealth.
